Trauma and Addiction

Everyone has dealt with a type of trauma that forever changes your life. It may not be obvious, but many of these traumas can lead to an addiction. A person who has experienced a trauma is at high risk of alcohol and drug use disorders. Some types of traumas included one or more of the following, accident, natural disaster, illness, PTSD, or sexual abuse. When any of these traumas are left untreated the survivor may feel desperate to do anything to make it all go away. This can lead many difference types of addictions; gambling, drugs, alcohol, sex and food. Trauma and addiction go hand and hand and you can’t recover from one without dealing with the other. Which is why many are moving to a dual diagnosis model of treatment. It is important to know if you or a loved one is dealing with trauma and addiction, healing can happen given the chance and resources.
