Redmond O’Neal’s Drug Recovery

It’s become very common to see the children of celebrity couples struggle with drug or alcohol addictions—most recently with Bobbi Brown, daughter of Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston. These kids can be exposed to an atmosphere and culture of partying and substance abuse and when they get old enough they begin to follow in their parent’s footsteps, or they chose to abuse drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with a difficult upbringing.

Redmond O’Neal, son of Ryan O’Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett, is a great example of the previously mentioned phenomenon—but thankfully he’s becoming a great example of how to overcome it. Redmond was arrested in August 2011 after police found heroin and a gun in his possession, and he was on probation for a drug related incident to begin with. O’Neal is facing up to six years in prison if he relapses or is arrested again, but it doesn’t appear that he’s on that road. Redmond had a court appearance in March 2012 where he looked noticeably healthier, he explained his exercise and education routine, and the judge praised him for his efforts. It’s clear that his drug treatment is working and it’s an encouraging example of how treatment can work if you’re dedicated and committed to it.

The stories of celebrities are often very public, but the ‘following in your parents footsteps’ phenomenon is not just limited to celebrities—because it’s a very real situation for most people. Though research hasn’t found a specific gene that can be passed down from parent to child that causes the child to be more apt to abuse substances, it has been proven that there is a behavioral effect that causes substance abuse—meaning simply if they see it and are a part of that culture, they’ll be more likely to do it themselves. This is definitely something that parents should keep in mind, but if it’s already happening with your children it’s never too late to seek help. Treatment and therapy programs work if your committed and the program is individually inspired to meet the needs of each unique person and their circumstances—and Seabrook offers these kinds of programs.
