Potential MLB Star’s Alcoholism

Coincidentally, Matt Bush has a very similar story to the very well documented and public story of Texas Rangers start outfielder Josh Hamilton. Hamilton’s story is a bit more dramatic because he was tagged as the next big superstar of Major League Baseball when he was drafted #1 overall in the 1999, then he subsequently fell into a dark addiction to heroin and alcohol that kept him out of baseball for five years. Bush was also drafted #1 overall in 2004, but only two weeks after he was drafted his alcoholism started to get him into trouble. He’s been in trouble with the law a few times since 2004 and he has consequently struggled on the field as a result. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2010 decided to give Bush one last shot to try and recapture the talent that made him a #1 overall draft pick years ago, but unfortunately Bush’s alcoholism has brought his career to an end.

Late on Thursday March 22nd 2012 Matt Bush was charged with a DUI and fleeing the scene of an accident after his SUV crashed into a motorcyclist, leaving the rider in critical condition. Bush had a blood alcohol level of .180, more than twice the legal limit. Bush has publicly discussed how Josh Hamilton’s story has influenced him to change his ways, and even after witnessing Hamilton’s very public relapse earlier in 2012, Bush didn’t take a lesson. This is another example of how alcoholism is a disease that needs to be taken seriously with committed efforts—otherwise it will continue to get worse.

It’s unfortunately common for people to fall into an alcohol addiction to try and cope with their problems, but substance abuse is never the right way to go, and unfortunately sometimes people learn the hard way. But in order to recover, it’s extremely important to first become conscious of your problem, or make your loved one conscious of their problem, and then find that burning motivation to change the addictive ways. It can be very difficult for a drug addict or an alcoholic and their family to accomplish these things on their own, so that’s where Seabrook can help.
