Drug Using Oscar Statue
On Sunday, February 22, millions of Americans sat down to view the 87th Annual Academy Awards. Most enjoy watching the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and look up to these seemingly perfect actors and actresses. But, there is more to them than what meets the eye, and these individuals aren’t as perfect as you think.
Over the years, we have lost many actors to drug addiction. It is not something that is often talked about in Hollywood, or even in the real world. It has such a stigma attached to it that many feel ashamed if they have the disease of addiction. An artist wanted to use The Oscars as a time to shine light on the subject. He did so in a unique way.
The artist, who goes by the name of ‘Plastic Jesus,’ set up his new work of art in Hollywood on Sunday. The piece was an Oscar statue on all fours snorting lines of cocaine. Underneath of the statue was a sign that read “Hollywood’s Best Party.”
“The piece is intended to draw attention to Hollywood’s hidden problem of drug addiction that effects hundreds of people in the showbiz industry and is largely ignored until the death of a high-profile A list celebrity,” says Plastic Jesus in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
Some thought the piece was odd and in bad taste for a happy occasion, but it definitely started conversations and hopefully shines more light on the disease of addiction.
