Drug Rehab Success Story: David Bowie

During the 1970s, legendary musical artist David Bowie was heavily into drug and cocaine use.  He has told of his experiences with cocaine and memory loss among other things in the hopes that he can reach young people today and deter them from getting hooked on drugs. There is not a lot known about David Bowie’s cocaine addiction from the actual time period he was on drugs.  Back in the 1970s, it was easier to keep things like that under the radar.  Being a celebrity, he was able to get away with more as the law tended to look the other way when it came to musicians and actors.  It was part of living that lifestyle.

David Bowie himself has come forward about his cocaine addiction more than anyone else has and this says a lot about him in regards to his character.  He considers himself fortunate to have lived through the era of drugs he found himself rampantly in, and has shown he indeed has a big heart, for he wants to teach the young people of today by his own example. He does not do very many interviews, but when he does, he talks candidly about his former drug use and how he hopes that young people will learn from his mistakes.  Others have come forward and stated that the music icon saved their lives by encouraging them to get clean and even insisting one makeup artist go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting with him so he could help her start her road to recovery.

Those addicted to cocaine can take a lesson from David Bowie. Regardless of how or how frequently cocaine is used, a user can experience acute cardiovascular emergencies, such as a heart attack or stroke, which may cause sudden death. Cocaine-related deaths are often a result of cardiac arrest or seizure followed by respiratory arrest. Behavioral interventions—particularly, cognitive-behavioral therapy—have been shown to be effective for decreasing cocaine use and preventing relapse. Treatment must be tailored to the individual patient’s needs in order to optimize outcomes—this often involves a combination of treatment, social supports, and other services. If you or a loved one has a problem with cocaine, then you should contact Seabrook as soon as possible because we offer these treatment programs. The sooner you reach out for help is the sooner you can get on the road to recovery!
