Don’t be Afraid of Being Judged

A very common fear for addicts when deciding whether or not to seek help through rehabilitation is being judged by their family, friends, and community members.  Whether someone struggles with alcohol, drugs, gambling, or cigarettes it’s very normal to be ashamed or embarrassed to have let their addiction get out of control. They might think that their addiction is something private that others don’t recognize, but in reality others do realize their problem but they may not have the courage to confront the addict about it. The most admirable move that an addict can make is to admit their problem and seek help. From an outside view, it’s tough for someone to confront an addict about their personal problems. But even if friends or family confront an addict about their addiction, it still takes the realization by the addict to understand that they have a problem.

A major symptom of alcoholism, chemical dependency, and other compulsive disorders like gambling is the minimizing and denial of the problem by the affected person. A sensitive, guided confrontation directed at the affected person is called a Family Intervention. Whether done in a family or workplace setting, family intervention is a way for the family and friends to confront the one they care for with kindness and respect, but also with direct honesty that will pierce the defenses of the addicted, helping them to see the damage their behavior is doing to themselves and those around them. Because family intervention is done by a group of family and friends, it makes an impact far more powerful than an individual could ever create on his or her own. It’s important for the addict to shed away the denial and fear of judgment and just accept that they are an addict and they need help.
