Celebrating Sobriety Anniversaries

Blog post by: Alumni Relations Specialist

Just for today, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year.  In sobriety we celebrate clean time.  I can remember being asked, “You celebrate the fact that you don’t do drugs?” Or “Isn’t that what you are supposed to do? What, do you want a pat on the back?”  Actually, yes, I do.  That is a big deal for me.  I could not believe I made it to 30 days without picking up a drink or a drug.  I am a drug addict and alcoholic. That is what I do.  The fact that I have not used in 30 days is a huge deal.  Then the yearly anniversaries come, and you sit up in the front of the room and share your story with other addicts and alcoholics.  People come just to listen to what I have to say and hear a message of hope.  There was a time when people did not want to see my face, and now they want to listen to me talk about my life.  When an addict and/or alcoholic gets one day sober, it is a huge deal, and it needs to be recognized.  So keep coming back, and get another day.
