Bath Salts Targeted in Newark Sting

“Bath Salts,” a form of synthetic drug that’s designed to exploit drug law loopholes, are the target of a recent sting in Newark. The New Jersey division of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) recently bought over 2,000 packages of bath salts from a man who allegedly made huge quantities of the drug with two men from Newark. The three men were arrested as part of “Operation Log Jam,” which was a large coordinated effort among law enforcement agencies nationwide. This takedown has removed one large bath salts manufacturer from New Jersey.

The DEA’s New Jersey agent, Brian R. Crowell, said about the drug sting “The compounds in these substances not only harm the users, but users may also endanger loved ones, members of the public, our first responders, and our emergency room personnel who may have to deal with extremely violent and paranoid patients.” The effects of bath salts can be extremely unpredictable, because they can be made of almost anything. However, people report violence and erratic behavior among users reported to have taken bath salts.
