Adults Getting Almost As Many Calories From Alcohol As Soda

A new study by the United States Center for Disease Control has found that Americans are getting more and more empty calories from alcohol—almost as much as soda. The study, which polled over 11,000 American adults, found that they were getting about 5 percent of their calories from alcohol, compared with about 6 percent for soda and other sugary beverages. “We’ve been focusing on sugar-sweetened beverages. This is something new,” said one of the authors of the study. Like soda, alcohol has lots of calories but few nutrients.

Many people might not realize the full impact that alcohol has on people’s health. The fact is that alcohol’s calories can cause problems even in addition to other effects that booze may have. The “beer gut” is no myth—excessive drinking can impact your waistline in addition to your emotions and brain. The effect can be even worse for problem drinkers, those who are addicted to or dependent on alcohol. The good news is that alcoholism is very treatable—the best remedy remains what it’s always been: a good program of treatment.

If you or someone you know has a problem with alcohol addiction or dependence, you should seek help now. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating alcohol and drug dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center.
