A new study is going to be published by Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research which explores the different paths that adolescents take in regards to alcohol. Though it’s common knowledge that the earlier teens get started drinking, the more likely they are to become alcoholics, the truth is a little more complicated than simply that. “Increased levels of exploration and risk taking seem to mark the transition from adolescence to adulthood,” said a corresponding author of the study, Marieke Wichers.

The study focused on both girls and boys as they transitioned from adolescence to adulthood. The findings showed that novelty- and risk-seeking behaviors (which are naturally associated with growing up) can lead teens into problem drinking, dangerous sex, or other illicit thrills.
