Admitting it is the First Step

When most addicts and alcoholics admit they have a problem and actually surrender to a 12 step program they have a mindset where as “my recovery will be easy sailing as long as I just go to meetings”. Wrong! There is a fantastic slogan in the fellowship that describes people who think this way, “Meeting Makers Only Make Meetings”. Now, there is nothing wrong with attending meetings, In fact, that’s great that a newcomer to a 12 step program has that kind of willingness, but real recovery happens when a newcomer begins to work a 12 step program of recovery.

Working a 12 step program of recovery entails attending daily meetings, getting and working with a sponsor, having a network of people in recovery and most importantly, and doing step work. Once, you have all of those pieces in place, you are well on your way to a strong recovery. However, you have to actually work at it. Recovery will not just come to you because you have done everything that has been suggested of you. There is no perfect way to work a 12 step program and quite honestly not everyone does it the same way. But the outline is always consistent. If you are new, welcome. We are glad you made it and hope you stay.
